What is traumatization?

A traumatic event means an event that is clearly different from a normal life event and exceeds one's own resources. The burden of psychological trauma is influenced by e.g. the shocking nature of the event, its surprise and duration, and the unpredictability of the event's consequences. Particularly burdensome are traumas involving an intentional harmful act by another person, especially when it violates the victim's personal integrity and human dignity (e.g. rape, assault or torture)
